Campus Sustainability Day

On October 22, 2008, Earth-minded Johnson State College students planned an exciting and informative slate of events to commemorate Campus Sustainability Day, a time dedicated to shedding light on how campuses across the nation can green up their acts. Held exactly six months before Earth Day, the day is the brainchild of the Society for University and College Planning [SCUP], a Michigan-based advocacy group formed in 1965.

Members of JSC’s Eco-Rep Team and Green Solutions Club are hosting the day’s events, which include something for everyone.

Highlights of the day include the following:

• 12:30 p.m. : Eco-Fashion Show in Stearns Dining Hall — Dresses made out of trash bags; other items of clothing made from recycled/reclaimed material.

• 1 p.m. : Garlic Garden Bed Preparation outside SHAPE Athletic Facility — In preparation for a Halloween Day planting of garlic bulbs — Vampires beware!

• 2 p.m.: Recycling Teach-In outside SHAPE, next to Garlic Garden — Come ready to answer questions and learn about how to properly dispose of trash, returnables, and recyclables and you could win snacks, drinks, other prizes!

• 8 p.m.: Captain Planet to the Rescue in the new film theatre in Stearns — View a Captain Planet video in the newly renovated Stearns Student Center space.
