About Amy Welch

Amy Welch came to the United States from her native England in 2006 after completing a Ph.D. in exercise science, with an emphasis on exercise and health psychology, at the University of Leeds. She joined NVU-Johnson in August 2012 after several years on the faculty at Iowa State University.

A longtime sports and exercise enthusiast, Amy first became interested in the psychological aspects when "I realized that I was completely unprepared for how strongly my emotions affected my performance as an athlete and that I didn't know what to do about it."

From there, her interests have evolved to include the effect of physical activity and other health behaviors on psychological health. As a teacher, Amy is particularly passionate about shedding light on the research that underpins our knowledge base and helping students bridge the gap between science and practice.

"My goal is that students in my courses finish the semester feeling confident about their ability to critically evaluate sources of their knowledge and research underpinning the subject matter, and how that will inform their practice as future health professionals," she says. Amy strives to create a relaxed, open classroom environment in which students feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and ideas.

In her free time, she loves to explore all that the Vermont outdoors has to offer, whether it is by bike, foot, stand-up paddle, kayak or on skis.
