About Sharon

Sharon Twigg joined the NVU-Johnson faculty in fall 2008 after spending two years as a visiting professor at Marquette University in Wisconsin. In addition to her teaching in the Writing and Literature Department, Sharon served as interim academic dean from 2016-17 and is now NVU-Johnson's associate academic dean.

A New Hampshire native who did her undergraduate work at UNH, Sharon spent four years in the publishing industry in Washington, D.C., before deciding to return to academia. She got her Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, where she specialized in 19th-century British and women's literature and wrote her dissertation on women's participation in economic and moral contracts in that time period's literature.

Though Sharon enjoyed her time in the Midwest, she says that "it's nice to be back in New England" where her family still resides. As for Johnson State, she says, "I'm excited to be at a small college where professors can really focus on teaching." Her students excite her too. "There are a lot of readers and writers who seem very engaged in my classes."

Her academic interests continue to stay with 19th-century literature, and she would like to publish more articles from her dissertation and perhaps expand it into a book. An equestrian, she also hopes to start researching women on horseback in the 19th century, particularly handbooks instructing women of the time on "proper riding etiquette."

In addition to horseback riding, Sharon also enjoys snowshoeing, cooking and spending time with her two Scottish Terriers. She and her husband live in Johnson.
