Career Support for LGBTQ+ Students

The Northern Vermont University Career & Internship Center is committed to supporting the LGBTQ+ community through recognition that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, and intersex students and alumni may have some unique considerations in their work-related decisions.

As staff and allies, we strive to honor each unique interpretation of self/gender/sexuality to its fullest, help individuals with any questions, make as few assumptions as possible, approach every person with a kind heart and sincere intention as well as to be open to learning and growing each day.

We have found that there are common questions among the LGBTQ+ community when it comes to the job and internship hunt.

Should I out myself in my resume, cover letter or in the interview? Outing yourself at any stage of the job search process is a very personal decision, so do as feels right to you. Some things to consider are your own comfort level and skills you have gained from being part of the LGBTQ+ community.

What special job search/career issues do transgender candidates face? There is little protection in the workplace for transgender individuals, and currently, only 19 states and D.C. include gender identity in their anti-discrimination laws—though more are working on inclusive legislation. Be sure to do your research ahead of time, pay attention to workplaces that address gender identity in discrimination policies and support those who identify as transgender.

What are some things to look for in a safe and supportive employer? It can be challenging to determine which workplaces are safe and supportive; some characteristics that may help you assess include:

  • Domestic Partner Benefits
  • Non-discrimination policies that include sexual orientation and gender identity/expression
  • Trainings that include sensitivity to LGBTQ issues
  • In-house support or employee groups, either formal or informal
  • Gender-neutral bathrooms
  • Positive statements from people with experience
  • Consult the Corporate Equality Index
