About the Concentration in Adventure Education
Vermont’s beautiful mountains are the ideal setting for you to hone your outdoor leadership skills. Whether you want to lead group tours and expeditions, teach rock climbing or other adventure skills, work in a therapeutic-recreation setting, or pursue other career opportunities involving the natural world, you’ll gain the advanced training and skills you need to succeed in this growing field.
In addition to learning techniques to lead outdoor programs, you’ll build your knowledge as an educator with courses in environmental science, education, biology, and psychology.
Learning Through Experiences
By studying Adventure Education at NVU, you’ll build a solid foundation in a supportive learning environment. Whether you have never spent a night outside or you just hiked the Pacific Crest Trail, we will help you to increase your competency in the outdoors. Here, you will participate in carefully structured outdoor experiences, developing outdoor living skills and then adding leadership, teaching, and technical skills as you progress. Some of this takes place in a classroom, but much of it happens outdoors.
Adventure Education Minor
The Adventure Education minor will provide students a grounding in outdoor education philosophy, methods, and practices, while exploring how adventure-based experiences are used for educational, developmental, or therapeutic outcomes. A combination of courses address theories and skills, and some may lead to professional credentialing including Wilderness First Responder. This minor is available to students majoring in any discipline other than Adventure Education.
