Gov. Phil Scott will speak May 19 at Johnson State College’s 151st commencement, at which about 310 associate’s bachelor’s, and master’s degrees are expected to be conferred. The 11 a.m. ceremony will be on the college’s South Lawn.

The Weather Channel meteorologist and Lyndon State College graduate Jim Cantore will speak May 20 at Lyndon’s 106th commencement, at which about 265 associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees are expected to be conferred. The 11 a.m. ceremony will be on the college’s soccer field.

At JSC, tent seating for the ticketed ceremony will be reserved for graduating students, their guests, and those involved in the commencement. Other guests may watch the ceremony from the lawn, as it is simulcast at the Dibden Center for the Arts, or online at jsc.edu. Gates will open at 9 a.m., and parking will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

Lyndon’s commencement will be preceded by a breakfast for graduates and their guests at 9:30 a.m. at the Alexander Twilight Theatre lobby. The commencement ceremony is free for the public, with seating on a first-come, first-served basis. The ceremony also will be live-streamed in the theater.
Cantore, who will receive an honorary Doctor of Science degree at the commencement, received a Lyndon State Distinguished Alumni Award in 1999. He was inducted as an inaugural member into the Vermont State Colleges Hall of Fame in 2016.

Cantore earned a Bachelor of Science degree in meteorology in 1986 from Lyndon State and has worked at The Weather Channel since then. He is the channel’s storm tracker during weather events and also covers daily forecasts and weather news on the channel’s “AMHQ” show. The White River Junction native now lives in the Atlanta area.

After the Lyndon ceremony, the public is invited to a coffee and dessert social at Stannard Gymnasium.

The graduation ceremonies will be the last commencements for JSC and Lyndon State before they officially unify July 1 as Northern Vermont University. After the transition, NVU-Johnson and NVU-Lyndon will continue to host separate commencements each spring.
