Aim Higher with a Master of Education Degree at Northern Vermont University

In our master of education program in education, you will learn how to work with students of diverse ages, abilities, and backgrounds. To help you find your direction, our concentration areas offer you a range of paths to choose from. You’ll have the advantage of working with faculty who have a mix of education specialties and classroom experience. Our graduates are qualified for careers not only in education but in business, industry, and other fields.

Up here, knowledge knows no bounds

You will build skills in working collaboratively, gain confidence with technological and pedagogical practices, and develop a global perspective in your approach to education. You’ll choose one of the following concentrations to develop the expertise you need:

  • Content-area specialization — Advanced study of English/language arts, mathematics, social studies, and/or science
  • Educational technology — Training to prepare instructional designers (librarians, curriculum specialists, and others) for all education levels and prepare personnel development specialists for business. Some online and hybrid courses
  • Elementary education — To pursue initial licensure at the graduate level, you must be a liberal studies major or the equivalent with a B average in related courses. Additional training opportunities available through an agreement with the Vermont Higher Education Collaborative (VT-HEC)

Our program requires students to complete at least 36 credits, which include a common core of 16-18 credits (six courses). The other credits are determined by the student’s concentration or study plan.

Teachers have the opportunity to become a member of a VT-HEC cohort and take classes in our program to request an additional endorsement from the Vermont Agency of Education for their teacher licensure.
