Innovate and Collaborate with a Degree in Political Science from Northern Vermont University

Politics is the art of negotiation. As a political science student at NVU-Johnson, you’ll gain a solid grounding in the theory and practice of how politics, political ideologies, and political leaders have shaped our world, created and enforced power structures, and led to changes in how we perceive our world.

Our program will prepare you to be an informed participant in public affairs and a better professional in any career that deals with the public, including top positions in business, government, and nonprofit organizations. Our political science students understand the political landscape and often pursue careers in politics or law. Many graduates have gone on to serve in the Vermont General Assembly and pursue other leadership roles that help shape the future.

A Focus on Real-World Experiences

In addition to traditional classroom study, you’ll have an opportunity to see actual politics at work. Students are exposed to real-world perspectives through talks and classroom visits from Vermont political leaders and by observing the state legislature in action in Montpelier.

Our Model UN club gives students a chance to travel to the Harvard Model UN conference each year to participate in a large simulated United Nations gathering, with students from around the country role-playing as UN delegates. And our location, about an hour from the Canadian border, in addition to our Institute of Canadian Studies on campus, also opens up opportunities north of the border for research, internships, and cultural investigations.

Secondary Licensure

Students who earn a bachelor of arts degree in political science are eligible to pursue endorsement for secondary education teacher licensure. Learn more about licensure requirements here.
