Make a Difference with a Master’s Degree in Counseling from Northern Vermont University

Students in our graduate counseling program at NVU-Johnson gain experience in the theory and practice of mental health, substance use disorders, and school counseling. Our graduates demonstrate a strong grounding in the knowledge and skills of the counseling profession, as well as in person-centered and strength-based approaches; culturally fluid practice in a diverse society; and a commitment to leadership, systems change, and advocacy in the profession, the community, and the larger society. Our flexible program lets you focus on an area of interest to tailor your studies to your career goals.

Curriculum

Our curriculum includes a core of required courses, additional specialization coursework in your area of interest, a personal growth experience, and an internship with an accompanying seminar. A thesis is not required. Whenever possible, faculty personalize the program to meet each student’s specific career objectives. Individually designed internships are developed with area agencies, schools, businesses, and colleges to give you hands-on experience.

Class Meetings and Timeline

This program combines face-to-face instruction and distance-learning activities geared to adult learners. Course delivery modalities for the M.A. in Counseling are determined by the instructor and range from hybrid courses, to in-person, evening courses based out of the NVU-Johnson campus, and intensive, in-person seminars either on campus or off campus. It usually takes 2.5-3.5 years to finish the degree, depending on your individualized plan of study. All students must complete the program within five years. Select courses are open to non-degree students on a space-available basis.

Program Options

Students can focus on one of the following concentrations:
