Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERFII)

The Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act (CRRSAA) was signed into law on December 27, 2020 and gave the U.S. Department of Education funds to distribute to institutions of higher education through the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERFII). Northern Vermont University has received $966,171 to provide one-time emergency grants to students for any component of the their cost of attendance or emergency costs due to coronavirus, such as tuition, food, housing, technology/course requirements, health care, mental health care or child care.

Northern Vermont University began awarding HEERFII grants on April 13, 2021. The first group of the HEERFII grants were automatically awarded to undergraduate students with exceptional need. The Expected Family Contribution (EFC) from the FAFSA was used to determine which students received these initial awards.  These grants will provide direct financial support to students impacted by COVID-19.

After the Group I (Block Grants) were awarded, $73,271 remains available to award through the application process. Students who did not receive a Block Grant but had exceptional need due to hardship as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic may apply.

Eligibility Criteria for Group 2 (Application) awards:

  • Student must be a US citizen or eligible noncitizen
  • Student must be currently enrolled at least half time in the 21SP semester at NVU at the time of the award.
  • 2020-2021 FAFSA is not required.
  • Student receiving a Group I Block Grant are not eligible for Group II (Application) funds.
  • Student must complete a HEERFII application for NVU to determine proof of need.
