A Leg Up When it Comes Time to Find a Job.

Nick Anastasi ’19 already knows how to do the work he’ll pursue after he graduates from Northern Vermont University-Lyndon. That’s because he’s been building real-world skills as a student.

As a broadcast and digital journalism major, Nick works at News7, the Emmy award-winning, student-run campus TV station, which broadcasts live five nights a week. While in the station, Nick learned how to be a reporter, anchor, producer, and director. “It’s really cool and a really unique opportunity,” Nick says. “Being in the newsroom is very hands-on.”

Real-World Experiences to Jump-Start a Career

As a reporter, Nick has covered fires, government meetings, police reports, the 2018 mid-term elections, and many other stories. “You become a part of the community. When I go to the grocery store, someone always stops me and says, ‘You’re on News7!’ To have an impact on other people’s lives is a treat, too,” says Nick, who came to NVU all the way from Olney, Maryland. “Being kicked into the real world is a great jump-start.”

Alumni make the jump-start more powerful. Our alumni return to campus to talk about their careers with broadcast students. One night, a producer and a reporter-anchor at WCAX-TV in Burlington watched in the control room as Nick reported on air. “They gave me some critiques afterward, and I really appreciated it,” says Nick, who is also pursuing a minor in atmospheric sciences.

Nick’s high-impact learning doesn’t stop at News7, he is gaining more hands-on experience off campus as a videographer for Kingdom Access Television, a nonprofit community cable station based in nearby St. Johnsbury.

Supportive, Available Professors

One of the most valuable parts the NVU-Lyndon education for Nick is the faculty.

“Having good faculty to support you and help you grow is definitely something that’s vital,” he says. “When you seek them out, they’ll help you. You can always go to them to talk, and that’s something that’s really helpful.”

Nick also enjoys the sense of community on campus and Lyndon’s location. “The scenery in the area is just gorgeous — the mountains, the views, it’s great,” he says. Our rolling mountains even inspired him to take up skiing since he has been at NVU.

Leadership Opportunities on Campus

Another opportunity at NVU that Nick pursued is the Student Government Association, of which he was treasurer. “It gave me a different perspective. You get to see a chunk of the student body you don’t usually see,” he says. “You get to help with ideas and dreams people have and make an impact on the campus.”

Nick’s SGA involvement gave him leadership opportunities as he pursued campus beautification, community service, and other projects. The leadership skills he has gained as a student will serve him well as he pursues his plan to eventually become a national-TV anchor and his solid News7 experience will help him stand out in the job market.

“A lot of NVU’s programs are hands-on and practicums, which is pretty unique. You get a sense of what you’ll be doing after graduation,” he says. “If you like small class sizes and hands-on learning then you’ll love it here.”
