Expand Your Perspective with a History Degree from Northern Vermont University

History investigates and makes sense of past human events and experiences, going beyond the “where and when” to the “how and why,” so we can understand current events and determine the path of our future. As you build critical-thinking skills with our diverse courses at Northern Vermont University, you can explore the rise of consumer culture, examine the Abenaki experience in the Northeast, and follow the changing roles of women in Europe from ancient to modern times, among many other topics.

Guided by supportive professors, your studies, and your involvement with speakers and experiences beyond the classroom, you’ll make your own discoveries. For your senior thesis project, you’ll synthesize everything you’ve learned, conduct original research on your chosen topic, organize and analyze the information, and present an effective presentation to an audience of your peers and faculty.

We also offer a minor in history at both our Johnson and Lyndon campuses.

Secondary Licensure

Students who earn a bachelor of arts degree in history at NVU-Johnson are eligible to pursue endorsement for secondary education teacher licensure. Learn more about licensure requirements here.
