Advising

Vermont State’s Team Approach to Advising

Vermont State University’s advising team includes both faculty and staff advisors, and most students will work with both throughout their academic program. Your advisors will be available throughout the week, offering in-person, email, phone, and/or teleconference (i.e., Zoom) meetings and conversations. And we utilize a simple scheduling tool (Bookings) to help you to easily keep in touch with your advisors and arrange meetings. As a student, you can find your advisors’ contact info and schedule a meeting easily through the Vermont State Portal.

Stay Connected and Graduate on Time

Vermont State advisors provide the foundational support to help you complete your program on the timeline you expect.

To help meet their goals, students work directly with their advisors at least once each semester for support with course registration, conversations about their academic programs and any supports they might need, adding minors and associate degrees to their program of study, and much more. Of course, we encourage more frequent conversations, too! Many students find the connections they build with their advisors to be a fantastic benefit of the Vermont State community.

International students (F-1 and J-1 visa holders) are assigned specially trained Student Success Advisors to help them navigate immigration rules and regulations, understand how to obtain on- and off-campus work authorization, and adjust to life on campus so they can thrive in our American education system.

Each student will have a different timeline to complete their degree or certificate, based on their needs, goals, and academic program. To earn an associate (60 credits) or bachelor’s degree (120 credits) in the standard two- and four-year timelines, students need to complete an average of 15 credit hours each semester or 30 credit hours each year.

Tips for Student-Advising Support Success

  • Take advantage of the tools available to track your progress.
  • Check your Vermont State email account regularly. Advisors, faculty, and staff all send timely news and information to your email account.
  • Advocate for yourself! Be sure to tell your advisors if your struggling and need academic or wellness supports. Vermont State staff offer so many services to meet your needs, build your academic confidence, and ensure you feel supported and connected.
