Community Service Learning A.S.S.I.S.T

The Service Learning Program at Northern Vermont University-Lyndon is committed to ensuring that students become engaged in outside of the classroom learning activities and experiences. Throughout the academic year there are a number of opportunities for students to become involved in volunteer efforts both on campus and throughout the community. These events are available to all students and help them to lead become well balanced students. It also provides an opportunity for students to get off campus and be part of helping others. Through this program Lyndon and its students have been able to make connections with local organizations and local residents in the surrounding area.

In addition to the weekly service opportunities there are also alternative break trips. During winter and spring break periods trips are planned to Guatemala, as well as in partnership with organizations like Habitat for Humanity for week long service trips as well. These trips are designed to be experiential learning opportunities where students will gain knowledge of other cultures, as well as learn life skills.

Service learning offers students immediate opportunities to also apply classroom learning to support or enhance a positive change in the community. During the year certain academic departments have required community service hours. The Service Learning program provides an opportunity to those students to complete those hours and apply what they have learned in the classroom. Throughout a student’s time at college there will be many experiences students will remember, some of the best and most meaningful of them are helping others and having fun participating in service opportunities!
