JSC Hosts Hunger Banquet to Support Johnson Food Shelf

November 10, 2010

Students in the Serve program at Johnson State College will host a Hunger Banquet from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, November 10, 2010 in the SHAPE Facility on the JSC campus. The meal is designed to raise awareness about hunger and poverty issues while raising much-needed funds for both the Johnson Food Shelf and the Vermont Campaign to End Childhood Hunger.

Participants do not what they will have to eat until they are assigned roles upon arrival. Depending on the level of poverty or wealth they are assigned, dinner will range from a simple bowl of rice to full-course meal.

“This is a powerful way to see and feel firsthand the effects of poverty,” says JSC senior Toni Little, who is coordinating the event with fellow senior Jessica Bachand. “While most events of this type focus on world hunger, we will have a presentation that focuses on hunger in Vermont.”

Little encourages members of the public and area students to attend. “This is not only a great awareness-building event, it’s a great way to support two organizations that are doing so much to address hunger and poverty issues in our community and our state. We hope the community will turn out in force and show their support.”

Tickets are $6 for students (with ID) and youth ages 3-11; $10 for adults; and $30 for a family of 4 (plus $5 for each additional person). Children 2 and under are free. Reservations can be made by calling 635-1287. Payment in advance is appreciated; people may send checks, payable to JSC Serve with “Hunger Banquet” written in the memo line, to JSC Serve Office, 337 College Hill, Johnson, VT 0656. Credit card payments can be made over the phone through Nov. 5 by calling 635-1207 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Serve is an award-winning program of volunteerism and social action supported by JSC’s Serve Office. For more information about the Hunger Banquet or other events, call the SERVE office at 635-1237.
