About John Kessler


John Kessler has taught Environmental Law at NVU-Johnson since 1995.

Since 1997, he also has served as the general counsel for the Vermont Agency of Commerce and Community Development, providing advice to the agency secretary and a diverse set of clients, including the departments of Economic Development, Housing and Community Development, and Tourism and Marketing, as well as the Division for Historic Preservation, Vermont Life magazine, the Vermont Film Commission, the Downtown Development Board, the Vermont Economic Progress Council, and the state’s chief marketing Officer. Before joining the agency, Kessler served from 1989 to 1997 as an assistant attorney general for the state of Vermont, acquiring extensive litigation experience in state and federal courts on environmental, constitutional and civil rights matters, as well as civil and criminal appeals.

In addition, he has devoted a substantial amount of his time to a wide variety of public and private organizations.

He lives in Montpelier. In his free time, he enjoys biking, snowboarding and walking in Montpelier’s Hubbard Park.
