Johnson State College Child Development Center Open to All

November 29, 2007

A safe, nurturing and educational environment for young children at Johnson State College is open to all in the community.

The Johnson State College Child Development Center is located in McClelland Hall on the Johnson State College campus in Johnson, Vermont. The center is licensed for 2-7 year olds, and is accredited by the National Association for Education of Young Children. It is the only nationally accredited center in Lamoille County. The has center received four stars from the State of Vermont’s Step Ahead Recognition System.

The center serves all children — parents do not have to be affiliated with Johnson State College to enroll a child at the center.

The center is a well-established community of educators who have many years of experience working with children and each other, ensuring a stable place for children to learn and grow. The lead teachers have teaching degrees.

Additionally, the center serves as a classroom for students interested in pursuing a career in education. JSC students from a wide variety of departments participate in and learn from the centers programs though observing, researching, assisting teachers, volunteering and completing internships.

“For parents who want their children to have an experience away from home, we have a facility where children can both be cared for and educated by trained, professional staff,” said CDC director Bev Corrow. “We help children develop emotionally, physically, cognitively and socially.”

The JSC Child Development Center is a part of the Child Nutrition Program. A cook prepares breakfast, lunch, and snacks for 10 months of the school year. Parents send in a cold lunch for their child during the summer months.

Fees for the 2007-2008 academic year are:

Full-time: $140 per week. For a family with two children enrolled full time at the center, a 10% discount will be given for the second child.

Part-time: $100 per week (children must be picked up by 12:30 p.m.). A fee of $30 a day will be charged for parents/guardians wishing to send their child two, three, or four full days. These slots are limited.

The Child Development Center is open Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.

When it comes to educational philosophy, the staff at the center believes that children learn through play. The growth of their social, emotional, intellectual and physical development is dependent on their direct interaction with adults, other children and a wide variety of classroom materials and experiences.

The role of teachers at the center is to encourage and guide interactive play, so that each child is challenged. The center provides a wide variety of experiences in the arts, language and literature, science, mathematics, cooking, social studies, and physical fitness.

Children are encouraged to share their creativity and ideas, build their sense of independence and self-esteem, and develop a sense of trust, respect and appreciation for each other.
