Cuban Professors to Speak Oct. 3 at Johnson State

University of Havana professors Consuelo Martin Fernandez and Rafael Betancourt will talk about the limits of reforms in Cuba on Oct. 3 at Johnson State College.

The talk, at 5 p.m. at Stearns Performance Space, is free and open to the public.

Fernandez is a psychology professor and Betancourt, her husband, teaches economics. The couple also will talk to several JSC classes that week.

Their visit is sponsored by the Ellsworth Trust, a private foundation established by a former JSC professor, which supports the study of political science and history through lectures, grants and travel opportunities.

Johnson State has offered occasional study trips to Cuba in recent years and donated art books to a Cuban library. JSC’s Arts and Culture of Cuba class, which features a visit to Cuba, has been offered every other year since 2012, with the next one scheduled for 2018.

On July 1, 2018, Johnson State College and Lyndon State College will become Northern Vermont University, a two-campus institution of higher education that combines the best of both colleges’ nationally recognized liberal arts and professional programs under a single administration.
