Dr. Winfrid Eisenberg to Address Nuclear Power’s Health Impact

February 16, 2009

The owners of the Vermont Yankee (VY) nuclear power plant in Vernon, Vermont, are seeking a renewal of their license to operate the 36-year-old nuclear reactor for another 20 years beyond 2012. To further public awareness about health and safety aspects of nuclear power plants, Winfrid Eisenberg, M.D. will discuss recent reports on the increased incidence of cancer in children living near nuclear installations and the health consequences of the Chernobyl nuclear accident.

Dr. Winfrid Eisenberg is a German pediatrician and a recognized authority on the issues of the hazards of nuclear energy for children, nuclear disarmament, and implications for human rights. He has participated in many public forums raising the awareness of the risks associated with the use of nuclear energy. Dr. Eisenberg will speak in Stearns Cinema in Stearns Student Center on the topic of nuclear safety at 4 p.m. on Monday, February 16, 2009.

Dr. Eisenberg’s tour is being organized by VYDA, the Vermont Yankee Decommissioning Alliance (www.vyda.org) and is co-sponsored by American Friends Service Committee VT, Central VT Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, Citizens Awareness Network, New England Coalition, Vermont Citizens Awareness Network, Vermont League of Conservation Voters, Vermont/New Hampshire Sierra Club, and VPIRG.
