LSC Professor Honored

Retired Lyndon State College Professor, Alan Boye, has been granted Professor of Humanities Emeritus Status. The award was confirmed through a special vote by the Vermont State College Board of Trustees. Lyndon State College President, Joe Bertolino, nominated Boye for the honor.

The honor is awarded to retired professors who have a recognized record of outstanding teaching, exceptional professional achievement, and have provided extraordinary service to their college. The individual must have a minimum of 10 years of full-time employment with the VSC.

Boye, Professor of English, retired in 2009 after 22 years teaching at LSC. Boye taught a variety of subjects to every student that entered his classrooms and was committed to his student’s individual personal and professional success. His former student, Gillian Remick ’01 shared, “If not for Alan’s dedication to our individual success, and without his passion for writing and storytelling I do not believe I would be where I am today. His lessons on writing were woven with lessons in history, the Classics, civic responsibility and relevance, and true-life examples of the possibilities that awaited if we pursued our quest to ‘be writers.'”

Colleague and Professor Richard Moye wrote: “He has been unfailingly generous as guide, mentor, and instructor to hundreds upon hundreds of students, many of whom owe their own notable success to Alan Boye’s influence and example.”

Boye’s notable contributions outside Lyndon walls include his long service on behalf of the St. Johnsbury Bike Path and his continuous work with the Passumpsic Valley Land Trust. Boye is also the author of Holding Stone Hands, Tales from the Journey of the Dead, Roadside Guide to Nebraska, and most recent Sustainable Compromise: A Yurt, a Straw Bale House and Ecological Living.
