Equal Pay Advocate Lilly Ledbetter to Speak
Equal Pay Advocate, Lilly Ledbetter, to Speak at JSC
March 10, 2011
In recognition of Women’s History Month, the JSC Women’s Center is sponsoring a talk by Lilly Ledbetter at Johnson State College at 4 p.m. on Thursday, March 10, 2011, in the Performance Space of the Stearns Student Center. Johnson State College is the second stop in a speaking tour at colleges in Vermont. The event is free and open to the public.
A former area manager at Goodyear Tire and Rubber plant in Gadsden, Alabama, Lilly Ledbetter sued the company after learning that she was being paid substantially less than males at the “good ol’ boy” factory. She lobbied for federal legislation to address the broader issue of equal pay for equal work. On Jan. 29, 2009, the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act was signed into law – the first legislation signed by President Obama.
