Fall 2020 Library Operations

August 11, 2020

NVU Community,

Beginning on Tuesday, August 18, Samuel Read Hall Library on the Lyndon campus and Willey Library on the Johnson campus will begin operating according to the plan described below. The chief goal of the plan is to provide library services to the best of our abilities while reducing opportunities for the spread of the SARS-COV-2 virus that causes COVID-19.

Hours of Operation: The main floors of both libraries will be open to students, faculty, and staff during three time blocks throughout the day. The time blocks are as follows: morning (8am-10am), afternoon (12pm-2pm), and evening (4pm-6pm). Please note that extended evening and weekend hours will be contingent upon the availability of Federal Work Study-eligible student workers.

Library Resources: All physical and electronic resources will continue to be available to students, faculty, and staff. All physical items will undergo a quarantine process before being made available again after each use. In order to borrow physical items from either library, visitors should ask for assistance at the InfoDesk. Electronic resources will continue to be available on a 24/7 basis. Printers, scanners, and copiers will be available while the facilities are open.

Access to Facilities: With the exceptions noted below, only the main floors of both facilities will be open. The libraries will operate as closed stacks libraries, and browsable collections on the main floors of both libraries will either be moved or made available upon request. Seating and desktop computers on the main floors of each facility will be reduced and spaced to allow for social distancing. While in the facilities, visitors must wear masks at all times, and food and drink will not be permitted. The Vermont Room and the IMC (LAC 202) on the second floor of Samuel Read Hall Library will remain open for class meetings and for other meetings scheduled through the Conference & Events office. Limited seating will also be available in the atrium and parts of the second floor of Willey Library.

Interlibrary Loan: Interlibrary loan will continue to operate as normal. We may quarantine physical items before providing them to the requester if necessary.

Information Literacy Instruction: Library workshops will be available, but remote options and interactive tutorials will be the preferred method of delivery.

Reserves: The NVU Libraries will continue to offer the reserve service, but there will be a significant delay in turnaround time. Print books and similar items will undergo a quarantine process that will take them out of circulation for a minimum of three days. Items such as DVDs and CDs are much easier to sanitize and can be made available faster. We strongly encourage you to work with your departmental liaisons to explore alternative digital course materials such as ebooks and videos from our digital collections and Open Education Resources.
