Annual fall series begins August 31, features talks on bobcats, climate change, whales, forest health and more.

A talk on bobcat genetics Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 31, will launch the fall 2016 Environmental & Health Sciences Speaker Series at Johnson State College. Saint Michael’s College assistant professor of biology Dagan Loisel will speak on bobcat anti-viral genes.
The Loisel talk and others in the series take place Wednesday afternoons through Dec. 7 from 4 to 5:15 p.m. in 207 Bentley Hall. All talks are free and open to the public. Other talks this fall include:
- Sept. 7: Joshua Halman, forest health specialist, Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation: monitoring and research in the Green Mountains
- Sept. 16: Craig Pease, Vermont Law School science and law professor: climate change and Yellowstone’s grizzly bears
- Sept. 21: Neil Kammann, Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation: managing Vermont watersheds
- Sept. 28: Declan McCabe, biology professor, Saint Michael’s College: river insect diversity
- Oct. 12: Bryce Stearns, corporate technical director, TestAmerica: crude oil spill investigations
- Oct. 19: Joe Roman, University of Vermont Gund Institute for Ecological Economics: raising whales
- Oct. 26: Jon Kim, Vermont Geological Survey geologist: contaminated bedrock aquifer in Bennington
- Nov. 2: Lief Richardson, Gund Institute for Ecological Economics: crop yields
- Nov. 9: Julie Theoret, Professor of Mathematics at Johnson State (topic to be announced)
- Nov. 16: Noah Ahles, University of Vermont Spatial Analysis Laboratory: crisis mapping
- Nov. 30: Julie Moore, senior engineer, Stone Environmental Inc.: nutrient and sediment losses in the Lake Champlain basin
- Dec. 7: Janel Hanrahan, Lyndon State College Department of Atmospheric Sciences (topic to be announced)
