Johnson State to Provide Free Tax Assistance Through April 7

Starting Feb. 10, Johnson State College will provide free assistance on Monday evenings to individuals seeking help in completing their federal and state income tax returns.

The service will be provided by three JSC business majors – all of them IRS-certified tax advisors – from 6 to 8 p.m. on Mondays, Feb. 10 to April 7, in the HTM lab (Room 108) of Martinetti Hall.

The students – Samuel Martin of Johnson, Danika Barry of Waterville and Shayne Kirby of Fairfax – attended four days of training sponsored by the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program and passed a test to become certified.

“We are very pleased to bring this service to our community,” said Associate Professor Henrique Cezar, who teaches in the college’s Business & Economics Department and led the effort to bring the program to JSC. “It shows great commitment on the part of our students, who gave up their Saturdays to become trained and are looking forward to helping area residents.”

In addition to gaining valuable experience and performing a good deed, the students will earn one academic credit for their participation. Assistance will be provided on a walk-in basis, with free parking available in the lot outside Martinetti Hall. Individuals are advised to bring their W-2 forms and other income documentation (including a copy of their 2012 return, if available) with them. The service is offered in collaboration with the Central Vermont Community Action Council.
