JSC Confers 381 Degrees

Johnson State College Celebrates 143rd Commencement

Johnson State College conferred 381 degrees at its 143rd Commencement on Saturday, May 15, 2010.

The ceremony was held on the college’s south lawn, overlooking College Hill.

The college conferred 241 bachelor of arts degrees, 46 bachelor of science degrees, 13 bachelor of fine arts degrees, 69 master of arts degrees, seven master of fine arts degrees, and five associate’s degrees.

The Commencement speaker was award-winning author Katherine Paterson, known for her books Bridge to Terabithia, The Great Gilly Hopkins and other ground-breaking children’s novels. Paterson is a two-time winner of the National Book Award and the Newbery Medal.

She was named the National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature for 2010-11, a position established by the Library of Congress to raise awareness of the importance of young people’s literature as it relates to lifelong literacy, education, and the development and betterment of the lives of young people.

Three Vermont students also spoke: Scott McDowell of Georgia (B.A., history); Cindy Chaffee of Barton (B.A., professional studies through the college’s External Degree Program); and Erik Wiese-Hansen of Richmond (M.A., education, with middle school licensure).
