JSC Gallery to Exhibit Paintings by Galen Cheney

Vermont Artist Cheney to be Visiting Artist at Johnson State College Gallery

May 20, 2010

“Mark by mark,” an exhibit of oil paintings by Galen Cheney of Middlesex, will be on display at the Julian Scott Memorial Gallery at Johnson State College (JSC) May 20-June 20. An opening reception with the artist will be held Friday, May 28, from 5 to 7 p.m.

Cheney is a visiting artist at Johnson State College and a frequent resident at the Vermont Studio Center. Her paintings of oil on paper or canvas feature luscious, bold marks that cluster, converge and fall apart. Density releases to spacious layers of color. “The evolution of my work has led me to an exploration of language… that conveys meaning through form,” she says. “This language I am creating has a million tongues and as many interpretations. It is a language that I, too, am trying to decipher.”

Some of Cheney’s new work in this exhibit emerged during her participation in the Vermont Studio Center’s Vermont week. Her marks and the use of titles in her paintings reference conflict, time, effort, language, change and impermanence.

The Julian Scott Memorial Gallery is located in the Dibden Center for the Arts on the JSC campus. It is open to the public 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, in the summer, as well as during Dibden Center events. Admission is free.
