JSC, LUHS to Present ‘Dances for the Deluge’ Fundraiser for Vermont Flood Victims

November 28, 2012

Dance students from Johnson State College and Lamoille Union High School will present a recital to raise funds for Vermonters affected by this year’s flooding at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, at Lamoille Union High School.

Donations will be gratefully accepted, and all proceeds will go to the Vermont Disaster Relief Fund to benefit residents who are still recovering from damage caused by Tropical Storm Irene.

The program, featuring both student and faculty choreography under the direction of dance professors Maris Wolff and Nicki Lefaivre, will be an eclectic mix of styles, including ballet, jazz, lyrical, hip-hop and modern dance. In addition, the program will feature a historical dance by John Playford taken from his English Dancing Master, which was published in 1651, and a piece choreographed especially for Johnson State College dancers by guest artist Joan Wiegers.

“We hope that this coming together of dancers, friends, family and neighbors will remind us of how important community is and how we can all help each other in times of need,” Wolff said. “We also hope that in addition to helping our neighbors financially, this will be an opportunity to nurture our community through the healing power of the art of dance.”
