JSC Observes Women’s History Month

Johnson State College is observing Women’s History Month in March with several events that are free and open to the public. They include:

• Tuesday, March 5: Former U.S. Ambassador and Vermont Gov. Madeleine Kunin will discuss “The New Feminist Agenda: Defining the Next Revolution for Women, Work and Family” at 4 p.m. in Stearns Student Center’s Performance Space. Kunin’s lecture will be based on her recently published book by the same name. She will address topics inherent in empowering women, including attaining a successful work and family life, and offer a roadmap to social policy that can help achieve success for working women. • Tuesday, March 19: Dolly Fleming, executive director of Mercy Connections, will present a lecture titled “Mercy, Women and Justice” at noon in the 1867 Room, Dewey Hall. Fleming will discuss the broad range of outreach offered to women through Mercy Connections, which offers education, transition, and business planning programs. • Tuesday, March 19: The film Miss Representation, written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, will be screened at 4 p.m. in 207 Bentley Hall. Like drawing back a curtain to let bright light stream in, this film uncovers a glaring reality women live with every day but fail to see, and addresses how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. • Monday, March 25: In collaboration with Vermont Public Television, a free, public screening of the documentary film Makers: Women Who Made America will be held at 4 p.m. in the Stearns Student Center’s Cinema Room. The film tells the story of how women have helped shape America over the last 50 years. It chronicles trailblazing women as they pursued their rights to a full and fair share of political power, economic opportunity and personal autonomy. The story is narrated by Meryl Streep, and interviews feature Hillary Clinton, Gloria Steinem, Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Oprah Winfrey and Barbara Walters, among others.
