Leadership Conference Returns to Lyndon

LYNDON CTR., Vt. – Lyndon State College’s Department of Student Life will host its 10th Annual Student Leadership Conference February 10. The free conference is open to students, staff, and faculty of colleges throughout Vermont and nearby states as well as area high schools. Last year more than 160 students traveled to Lyndon for the daylong event.
This year’s theme is Voices of Leadership: Defining Your Story. According to Lyndon Assistant Director of Student Life Alyssa Estus, “The objective with this theme is twofold: To examine and celebrate the unique experiences and aspects of our identities that make us vividly different from one another and also to use these distinctive stories of our lives to come together as a group of leaders who are open, aware, and empowered by learning from others.”
The conference, the only one of its kind in Vermont, draws about 150 students from Vermont and nearby states. It was created in 2008 for resident assistants in the Vermont State Colleges System to build bridges and foster connections among institutions of higher education across the region. Attendees are encouraged to present and engage in conversations that can strengthen individual leadership skills, enhance departments on campus, and improve student life.
The event is free for attendees who register, which gives student leaders the opportunity to attend this valuable conference without financial concerns.
Attendees will enjoy the motivational words of two keynote speakers. LaToya René Robertson, a talented composer and educator, has created music for television shows, toured internationally, and released her first book. She will share her experiences with body image, self-worth, combating poverty, being female in male-dominated industries, pursing goals, daring to stand out, and overcoming adversity.
Speaker Irene Tu, a Chicago-born, San Francisco-based stand-up comedian, actor, and writer, will deliver biting, humorous social commentary with an emphasis on sharing her identity.
