NEK Community Orchestra Performs Dec. 9 at Northern Vermont University-Lyndon

The Northeast Kingdom Community Orchestra (NEKCO) will perform its winter concert at 3 p.m. Dec. 9 at Northern Vermont University-Lyndon’s Alexander Twilight Theatre. Admission for the public is by donation.

NEKCO, based at NVU-Lyndon, is led by conductor and artistic director Jason Bergman, an NVU-Lyndon adjunct instructor who directs the strings program at St. Johnsbury Academy.

The concert will feature works by Mozart, Stravinsky and other composers. The Northern Vermont University-Johnson Chamber Singers, led by NVU-Johnson assistant professor of music Bethany Plissey, will perform with NEKCO, in addition to young violinists with EPIC Music, a program of Catamount Arts in St. Johnsbury.

The NEKCO concert has a unification theme to reflect the unification this year of Lyndon State College and Johnson State College as Northern Vermont University, with campuses in Lyndon and Johnson. Some NEKCO members will perform at the annual Winter Gala concert Dec. 16 at NVU-Johnson. The unification theme also reflects the diverse community of musicians in NEKCO.

The orchestra is made up partly of NVU-Lyndon and NVU-Johnson students, faculty and staff. NEKCO also includes students, teachers and staff from Lyndon Institute, St. Johnsbury Academy, Riverside School, St. Johnsbury School, Miller’s Run School, Burke Town School, Waterford Elementary School, Good Shepherd School, Danville School and Barnet School, as well as home-schooled students.

NEKCO was founded in 2004 by Beth Norris, who taught at Lyndon State College.
