‘New JSC President is First-Generation Grad’

In a profile of Johnson State’s incoming president, Dr. Elaine C. Collins, the Stowe Reporter talks about the parallels between her background and that of many of the college’s students, noting: “She appreciates that Johnson provides an avenue to higher education for local residents, as well as out-of-staters who want to study at a small school, with plenty of opportunity for outdoor recreation, and in a gorgeous setting – on a hill looking out at the pristine and dramatic Whiteface Mountain. ‘I think it’s marvelous to have a pipeline where you can continue your education right in your backyard, particularly for first-generation students, because it’s tough to leave your family behind,’ Collins said. ‘I was in my backyard, too, and I was able to travel home when I needed.’ “
