Brahms, Verdi, Gounod, Stravinsky — German, Italian, French, Russian. “Such a program of music for voices and wind instruments” writes Lisa Jablow, the new PVS Chorus Director, who will conduct the PVS&C program on Sunday, March 9, “might seem, to some, a bit rarified. But it’s a very natural pairing. After all, the voice is the original wind instrument, capable of an infinite variety of colors and dynamics — not unlike the spectrum of orchestra winds, from the flute right down through the tuba.”

PVS Music Director Paul Phillips and Ms. Jablow have selected some lovely gems for this annual PVS choral concert. The program will begin with the Begrabnisgesang, an early work of Johannes Brahms that seems to be a small-scale study for his later monumental German Requiem. This will be followed by two sacred settings of Giuseppe Verdi for voices alone: the Pater Noster, an adaptation, in Italian, of the standard Latin text by the 13th-century poet Dante Alighieri; and the Ave Maria, based on an “enigmatic scale” that had been published in an Italian newspaper as a challenge to composers. “These pieces are not performed very often but I love them,” says Jablow, “because they show an aspect of Verdi’s adoration of the voice that we don’t really see in his operas, and only somewhat more so in his few non-operatic vocal works.” After intermission, the wind instruments will be showcased in the charming and lively Petite Symphonie by Charles Gounod. The program will end with voices and winds combining for a rendering of the unique and stunning Mass by Igor Stravinsky.
