Trailblazing Rock Duo Mr. Airplane Man Here on May 4

Band reunites, makes Village Voice reviewer’s ‘Top 10’ list

April 21, 2016

Mr. Airplane Man, a blues-heavy rock duo featuring Margaret Garrett on guitar and vocals and Tara McManus on drums, vocals and occasional keyboards, will perform in Johnson State College’s Stearns Student Center Performance Space on Wednesday, May 4. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

The show marks the Boston-based duo’s recent return to touring. Starting in the late 1990s, Garrett and McManus quickly made a name for themselves through their distinctive blend of country blues and garage pop.

After an initial tour with Morphine, Mr. Airplane Man recorded a self-titled EP and then embarked on an extensive U.S. tour, playing with such notable acts as the White Stripes, Detroit Cobras, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and others.

In addition to bringing their sound to live audiences in the U.S. and Europe, they released three albums featuring their blend of “hypnotic blues, haunting slide guitar, and idiosyncratic rock and roll with dreamy, yearning pop sound,” before breaking up for nearly 10 years. In 2014, Garrett and McManus reunited, releasing a new album, Lost Tapes, which Village Voice music writer Jeffrey Morgan included in his “Top 10 of 2014” list.

The May 4 performance at JSC is an opportunity for Vermont audiences to hear Mr. Airplane Man’s “gritty, saturated blues-rock and airy, almost Spectoresque pop” live and in person – and free of charge.
