Two Juniors Inducted into Sigma Xi

Johnson State juniors Shayna Bennett of Belvidere and Steven Lamonde of Hingham, Mass., recently were inducted into Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society, the international honor society of science and engineering. Both are majoring in environmental science, with concentrations in analysis and assessment. Lamonde also is pursuing a minor in mathematics.

Both students are gaining hands-on research experience while at JSC. Along with two other students, Bennett won an “Outstanding Undergraduate Poster” award at the Geological Society of America Northeastern Section’s 50th annual meeting in March. Meanwhile, Lamonde has received funding from JSC’s Environmental and Health Sciences Department to work as a research assistant this summer with faculty member Dr. Kevin Johnston on geographic information systems (GIS).

Sigma Xi is composed of scientists and engineers, whose research spans the disciplines of science and technology. Society chapters can be found at colleges and universities, government laboratories and industry research centers around the world. More than 200 Nobel Prize winners have been members, and undergraduates such as Bennett and Lamonde, whose research shows promise, are following in their footsteps.
