VT Supreme Court Justice Skoglund Discusses ‘Working Hard and Loving It’

Vermont Justice Speaks About Public Service

October 19, 2010

Vermont Supreme Court Justice Marilyn Skoglund will speak on the value of working in public service at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 19, in the Stearns Performance Space at Johnson State College. Her address, “Public Service as a Career: Working Hard and Loving It,” is free and open to the public.

Justice Skoglund has served on the Vermont’s highest court since 1997 and is one of only two women on the Supreme Court. She has worked in public service in Vermont for 30 years, including serving as chair of the Vermont Human Rights Commission.

The central tenet of her talk is the importance of finding work that is fulfilling and sticking with it even when the road gets rough. “There is no greater satisfaction than finding what it is you care about and being fortunate enough to find work in that area,” she says. “There is great joy to be had in working hard for something other than a salary.”

Justice Skoglund’s talk is this year’s annual Lamoille Seminar on Public Service, which is sponsored by the Sylvester-Hulburd Endowment at JSC. Established in honor of Lamoille County attorneys Harold Sylvester (1904-1985) and Benjamin Hulburd (1898-1964), the endowment recognizes and promotes public service in the region. Justice Skoglund will receive the 2010 Sylvester-Hulburd Award for Public Service during her appearance at the college.
