Jess Barber ’20, Outdoor Education, Leadership, and Tourism
Jess found NVU when she was ready to take her associate in adventure sports to the next level. She chose the management and administration concentration, which combined her love of the outdoors with her natural knack in the management field. Today, she’s a fulltime teacher in an outdoor nursery program, learning about another side of the outdoor ed field as she looks toward her future on the administrative side.

The exercise science faculty convinced Erin to choose NVU when she toured the campus in high school. “You could just see the professors’ passion for this field and their passion for teaching. That pretty much sold me there,” says Erin, who pursued concentrations in health fitness and strength and conditioning.
Other advantages that NVU offers sold Erin, too. “I didn’t want to be just a number in a large lecture hall,” she says. “I wanted a small college that would give me a home away from home” where she could know faculty and staff personally.

Christian fulfilled a dream the year before he started in NVU’s Graphic Design program: a year of Amateur National Motocross racing during which he won three national titles. “I always wanted to see more of the country,” he said. “I got it that year, and came back with a new perspective.” Graduating in May 2021 with a B.A. in Graphic Design, an A.S. in Photography, along with minors in both Marketing and Business, Christian’s drive on the race course has transferred into his drive in the classroom and soon his career.

She takes good care of herself, and it will be interesting to see these connections in the research, she added.
