Late in 2016, the Vermont State Colleges System Board of Trustees unanimously approved a measure to ensure that all VSCS institutions will be tobacco-free no later than July 1, 2019. The approved policy can be found here. Both campuses of Northern Vermont University became tobacco-free on July 1, 2018.

Colleges and universities that have adopted tobacco-free policies have spread across the country, in fact, according to tobaccofreecampusvt.org, there are more than 1,600 colleges and universities that have gone 100% tobacco-free or smoke-free. College and university campuses can have a large impact on tobacco cessation and prevention efforts given the very small number of people that start using tobacco beyond the traditional college-age years.

Working groups on both campuses have been meeting to discuss issues pertaining to policy education, accountability, and various resources available to anyone wanting to cease their use of tobacco. You will now see new external signage on both campuses. You will also see more campus-specific electronic messaging and internal signage regarding resources for community members as we get closer to start of the fall semester.

We recognize that the successful implementation of this policy will take time. As has been the case on many other campuses, education, patience, and voluntary compliance will ultimately lead to a culture shift over time. Respectful interaction among members of our community will be crucial during this transition. By joining so many other 100% tobacco-free colleges and universities, we reinforce our mission to prepare our students to be critical thinkers and engaged global citizens while maintaining a healthy atmosphere for all who learn, work, and visit Northern Vermont University.

Both campuses follow the same academic calendar. Breaks, holidays, and other milestones will happen concurrently on each campus.

You can view the academic calendar for campus-based classes here.

NVU Online students follow a different calendar, which can be found here.
