WJSC: Radio Johnson
The Voice of NVU-Johnson
From its earliest days in the late 1960s, when it could be heard on campus only as far as Arthur and Martinetti halls, to today, when the internet makes it possible to hear our community DJs anywhere in the world, WJSC-FM is the voice of Northern Vermont University-Johnson. Located on the top floor of Stearns Student Center overlooking the campus quad, the station broadcasts music and conversation throughout the Lamoille Valley and beyond. We provide an alternative to commercial radio with the goal of educating and empowering our student and community DJs with the experience they need to become professional broadcasters.
Tune in to 90.7 on your FM dial if you’re in the area, or stream it over the internet!
A Brief History of WJSC
WJSC-FM, “the voice of the mountains,” began broadcasting in the fall of 1968. Starting at just 10 watts, the station now broadcasts at 250 watts and streams worldwide via the Internet 24/7. We have come full circle back to the Stearns Student Center, where we started in the late 1960s.
In 2002, the Johnson Student Government Association awarded us more than $6,000 to upgrade our broadcast studio. A new sound board, CD players and other upgrades equipped us to serve as a creative outlet for the community for years to come. WJSC remains a vital part of campus life and was nominated in 2014 for a “Daysie Award” from Seven Days as Vermont’s best college radio station.
How to Get Involved
WJSC is open to all NVU-Johnson students, faculty, and staff. We also open our studio to community members who want to broadcast their own shows. All participants must complete a two-week training program and adhere to the rules and regulations of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the Vermont State Colleges, Northern Vermont University, and WJSC-FM. Contact station advisor Jeffrey Angione to inquire about our training program and available time slots.
