SERVE

Build Community and Friendships with SERVE.

SERVE is the center of community engagement and service at Northern Vermont University-Johnson and provides thoughtfully organized direct-service opportunities that address specific social issues and community needs. We believe that service learning promotes lifelong active citizenship, where community becomes a priority in values and life choices.

SERVE coordinates multiple programs on campus, providing long-and-short-term opportunities for every student to get engaged and give back to the community.

SERVE Local

SERVE Local offers a variety of local service opportunities for students, staff, and faculty every week throughout the academic year. Volunteers meet beforehand to learn about a social issue and travel throughout Lamoille County to provide direct service for community organizations. Afterward, members reflect and celebrate the experience. This is a great way to get involved, meet other students, and get to know the greater community.

CommUnity Meal

Volunteers from NVU-Johnson and other community partners serve a free lunch for community members in the town of Johnson. A local church donates the space and kitchen, NVU’s food service vendor supplies the food, while members of the university and town community work at the meal while building strong connections with neighbors.

Badger Alternative Breaks

Badger Alternative Breaks, the alternative break program, gives students the chance to engage in local, national and international community service projects during fall and spring breaks. Johnson State College was a founding chapter of the national organization Break Away in 1991 and has sponsored more than 120 alternative-break trips involving 2,000-plus participants since.

American Red Cross Blood Drives

NVU-Johnson hosts one of Vermont’s largest blood drives twice a year in the SHAPE multi-gym. Students volunteer to keep the drive running as smoothly as possible and participate in strong numbers to donate blood. Our 2014-15 blood drives collected over 200 pints of blood for local blood banks!

Thanksgiving Basket Project

The NVU-Johnson community partners with NVU-Johnson Dining Services and the Johnson Food Shelf to fund-raise and assemble Thanksgiving meals for local families in need. In 2015, 72 baskets plus a monetary gift with the money raised beyond the goal were donated to the Food Shelf.

Drop & Swap

This free community event hosted by NVU-Johnson connects students and the community and starts with the idea that one person’s junk is another person’s treasure. Area residents drop off their clean, used clothing on campus, where teams of volunteers sort them. The next day, anyone can come and take items that they need, for free.
