About Kathleen Brinegar

Kathleen Brinegar, Ed.D., joined the education faculty at NVU-Johnson in 2010, bringing with her a broad background in research and teaching related to adolescents. She publishes and presents extensively on various aspects of adolescent education and has taught and consulted in middle and high schools throughout Vermont. Her research and publications focus on equity and cultural responsiveness and include studies related to the education of immigrant and refugee adolescents, curriculum integration in middle schools, adolescent motivation and engagement, and content-area literacy. Throughout her work, she strives to bring student voice and input into the discussion on educational reform.

In addition to her work at NVU-Johnson, Dr. Brinegar is on the board of the Middle Grades Collaborative, and is an active member of the Middle-Level Education Research Special Interest Group of the American Educational Research Association. She serves on the Editorial Review Board of the Ohio Middle-Level Association Journal and as a reviewer for Middle Grades Review, and Middle Grades Journal.

Dr. Brinegar completed her academic studies at the University of Vermont, beginning with a B.A. in English and history with a minor in women's studies. She then completed her master's degree in Curriculum Instruction, taught in Vermont public schools, and returned to UVM to earn a doctoral degree in educational leadership and policy studies. Before signing on with NVU-Johnson, Dr. Brinegar taught at UVM and coordinated the Vermont Adolescent Literacy and Learning Initiative.

Dr. Brinegar lives with her husband, son, and daughter in Jericho. In her free time, she enjoys running, hiking, snowboarding, and yoga.
